For 60 years Washington Radiology has advanced the practice of radiology and diagnostic medicine. Our leadership began with our founder, Dr. Eugene J. McDonald (deceased), who was well known as an authority in the area of abnormalities of the birth canal and the placenta. Dr. Martin A. Thomas, now retired, began work with the use of x-rays to diagnose breast diseases in the 1960s, thus becoming a pioneer in the modern day mammography. In 1971, in a collaborative effort with Columbia Hospital for Women and a research foundation, WRA physicians - along with Dr. William Cochrane, an OB/GYN now deceased - and Dr. Thomas began operating the Washington metropolitan area’s first OB/GYN and abdominal ultrasound service.
Our early partners set the standard for achievement at WRA which remains in our culture to this day.

We believe the quality of our work is vital to our success and your health. That’s why we pride ourselves on not only trailblazing the way to achieve our industry’s gold standards, but also helping to set new standards for the industry through technology and research.
As a group, WRA has been at the forefront in achieving industry accreditations for its diagnostic care. We were the first practice group in the Washington area, and among the first in the nation, accredited for mammography by the American College of Radiology; the first in the United States accredited for ultrasound by the American College of Radiology; and, among the first to be accredited for MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Our group’s leadership extends to assisting the next generation of diagnostic imaging professionals as well. WRA physicians and technologists lend their expertise and resources to third-year residents from Georgetown University Medical Center. Physicians in the Radiology Residency Program perform a month-long rotation at WRA sites to obtain additional training in applied ultrasound.
