NeuroQuant MRI
NeuroQuant software is used in conjunction with MRI to scan the brain in a specific sequence. Using this tool, we measure regional brain structures that are at risk when due to an injury or when brain function is in decline.
Using the advanced capabilities of NeuroQuant software, we can quickly and efficiently screen for potential health issues related to brain injury, cognitive function and neurodegenerative conditions.
FAQs
A NeuroQuant MRI exam is an extra scan sequence that is added to a regular brain MRI exam and produces quantitative brain imaging data and analysis. Structures within the brain are measured by volume using the images and the NeuroQuant software. The data is then compared to same-age peers in an FDA database adjusted for age, sex and cranial volume.
As with other MRIs, because there are no X-rays and ionizing radiation, this exam presents no known risk to adults and children.
Our NeuroQuant program is based on an FDA comparative database of normal volumetric information for adults ages 18 to 95. If you are outside this age range, the reporting will reflect that your results are being compared against another age grouping, which may impact the accuracy of the results.
After your exam, a neuroradiologist who specializes in brain imaging will review your case and interpret the MRI and data findings. The analysis will be included in the final report created by the radiologist overseeing your care. The report will be sent to the referring physician who ordered the exam, and they will share the results with you.
Preparing for Your Exam
Patient peace of mind starts with the right preparation. In addition to the written order from your physician, bring any prior images or reports from outside Washington Radiology with you to your appointment, if related to the reason for your visit with us.
For all MRI patients, we request the following:
- Continue to take any medications prescribed by your physician, unless otherwise directed.
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, hooks, etc.
- Because of the magnetic field, do not wear metal hair clips or eye makeup that may contain small metallic flecks, which can interfere with your scan.
- Leave jewelry and valuables at home.
- A secure locker will be available to leave metal objects, like your keys and watch.
MRI With and/or Without Contrast
- Inform us if you have a pacemaker, artificial heart valves or any metal objects in your body, or if you are pregnant or nursing.
- Do not eat or drink two hours before your exam.
If you have follow-up questions about these MRI preparations, contact the Washington Radiology office where your exam is scheduled and ask to speak with the nurse.
